MSc. Urban Studies

Course Description

Cities in ‘developing’ countries face a range of issues often distinct in nature and scale from cities in ‘developed’ countries. This course aims to explore the questions of whether and how cities in the global south can be sustainable, and how they can continue as places that sustain cultures, economics, and nature. Key topics to be examined with cross-cutting issues include conceptualisations of urban sustainability; basic technological and theoretical models of human-nature interaction; visionary possibilities for the future of cities and metropolitan regions, especially in Ghana and the developing world; sustainability measurements (ecological footprints, social capital); urban sustainability initiatives and practice in the areas of health, housing, and economic development.
