Workshop on Land Use Stresses on Urban Environment in Accra, Ghana

This workshop, held on March 25, 2022 at the Cedi Conference Centre, sought to explore the dynamics of environmental change and associated pollution in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA). The workshop’s overarching objective was to gather participants’ perspectives on the extent to which GAMA is creating resilience in the face of increasing land-use-induced environmental pollution. It was funded by UKRI and GCRF partnership funds through the ARUA COE, University of Lagos. Representatives from government institutions, academia, development practitioners, and opinion leaders from various communities attended the event. Prof. Dan Ofori, Provost of the College of Humanities in delivering his opening remarks emphasised the importance of the event for national development.

The workshop led to unearthing the pathways of land use-induced environmental pollution, the manifestations of risk and vulnerability in disproportionately polluted urban communities. Moreover, it provided insights into the existing institutional framework and innovative approaches to addressing the effects of poor urban environmental quality. The overall outcome of this event was the production of a scoping study report titled: ‘Urban Resilience in Africa: A Scoping Study of Land Use Stresses on Urban Environment in Accra, Ghana’. The scoping study also resulted in the publication of an article in the African Journal of Housing and Sustainable Development (Vol 4, No 2, 2023).
